CHAPTER 30
Getting out of California
Mark drove north on Interstate Five, pulling off to find a funding station at Encinitas. Nikki left the car to try her daddyâs bankcard and the pin numbers Mark had slipped into his pocket.
âHope those were actually the right access codes,â Mark muttered to himself.
Nikki returned to the car with a grin on her face.
âWe wonât have to worry about money!â she announced. Then she became solemn. âUnless Uncle Germaine finds a way to get into Daddyâs account.â
âThat will only be a matter of time. We should transfer it all out before that happens.â
âI have my own account,â Nikki offered.
âOkay, thatâs a start, but you can be tracked every time you use it.â Mark considered suggesting his hidden account but withdrew that idea as one unfair to Nikki. âYes, letâs do the transfer at our next stop,â Mark decided.
They continued north to Oceanside where Mark intended to locate another funding station. In the event movement on the account was traced, it would point north. Traffic on the I-5 became a parking lot of red lights.
âMust be an accident,â Nikki offered.
âThe Oceanside exit is still a few miles away.â
Inching closer, twenty minutes later floodlights illuminated a checkpoint. Nikki saw it too and sat up. Markâs heart came up in his throat.
âOh God,â she exclaimed. âItâs Marines from Camp Pendleton.â
Mark frantically scanned the area. There was no turning back or any possible exit. They were flowing in a river of cars, perhaps to his end. Their car inched ahead, stopping beside a young Marine. Mark lowered the window.
âID,â the Marine spoke with firm courtesy, shining his flashlight into the car.
Mark handed over his passport. He tried to calm his pounding heart.
âWhatâs going on?â His voice rasped with a rattle. The Marine stared at them, shining his light in their faces.
âYour ID, Miss.â
Nikki dug in her purse for her passport.
The Marine studied both IDs. His attention went back to Mark. He stepped back to eye the car.
âLet me see your driverâs license.â He returned to the door, his head almost inside the window. Mark produced the license with a shaking hand. He waited for the hammer to fall.
âA Mexico license?â the Marine asked, wanting an explanation.
âMy family, I mean, my parentsââ Mark swallowed hard. His mind churned to gain controlâordering him to be sharp!
âYes?â
âThey worked in Mexico and we lived there. Theyâdisappearedâin the exodus. I have a grandfather in Washington.â
âHow about you, Miss? How old are you?â
âFifteen. I was on vacation in Mexico when my parentsâ¦,â Nikki couldnât go on.
âHer mother and father disappeared also. Iâm helping her find relatives.â
The Marineâs expression softened.
âI understand,â he spoke low, âwe canât find my grandmother. We have orders to check for illegals, drugs, bombs; the world is in one hell of a mess!â He handed the passports back. âI wish you luck.â
âThanks,â Mark answered, anxious to leave.
âDonât forget, Marine, itâs not too late to find and believe in the Jesus your grandmother knew,â Nikki called out and flashed the Marine a warm smile.
